Celebrated Jazz Harpist Park Stickney gives performance at CCM on February 28

UC College-Conservatory of Music hosts jazz harpist Park Stickney for a concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, in Robert J. Werner Recital Hall. Celebrated internationally for his innovative playing, Stickney is joined by CCM Professor of Saxophone James Bunte and CCM Jazz Bass student Teddy Mechley. The concert, which is Stickney’s Cincinnati debut, is free and open to the public.

CCM Voice alum named one of Yamaha’s “40 Under 40”

Yamaha honors the work of music educators with the "40 Under 40" list, highlighting young teachers and pedagogues who bring innovation to their classrooms. UC College-Conservatory of Music alumna Paulina Villarreal (DMA Voice ’18, MM Voice ‘15) made the 2024 list for her work as an Assistant Professor of Voice at the University of Memphis. Her efforts to diversify the curriculum's repertoire brought important awareness to lesser-known composers from underrepresented backgrounds.

CCM Voice student receives Encouragement Award at prestigious Houston Grand Opera Competition

UC College-Conservatory of Music undergraduate Voice student Sam Dhobhany recently won the Ana Maria Martinez Encouragement Award in Houston Grand Opera’s 2024 Eleanor McCollum Competition for Young Singers. Dhobhany, a bass-baritone in the studio of Professor Ken Shaw, competed in Houston on February 2 during the “Concert of Arias,” the competition’s live-broadcasted final round.

WVXU: A year into Ohio's legalized sports betting, gambling addiction is on the rise

According to the most recent Ohio Gambling Survey, more than 250,000 Ohioans have a problem gambling disorder. The number of people with the disorder tripled between 2017 and 2022 and, after sports betting became legal last year, experts expect the trend to continue. State leaders said it was "inevitable" to legalize sports gambling in the state since it was already happening without regulation and taxation. However, experts say the ubiquitous nature of online sports betting apps has led to an increase in addiction.

UC research links prison time with increase of TB

Tuberculosis, the main cause of death due to a single pathogen globally, causes more than 1.5 million deaths each year. New research from the University of Cincinnati finds that being in prison or being a former prisoner is responsible for high rates of multidrug resistant TB.
