New data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency shows that industrial pollutants, known as forever chemicals, which are linked to cancer and other serious ailments, are rarely detected in samples of drinking water from Cincinnati and most nearby communities. Cincinnati.com posted a story on PFAS, and one of the experts cited was Susan Pinney, PhD, of the Department of Environmental and Public Health Sciences at the UC College of Medicine.

The UC College-Conservatory of Music is proud to announce that Anthony Dorsey, a longtime student in the CCM Starling Preparatory String Project, was recently named a semi-finalist in the annual Sphinx Competition. Dorsey is joined at the semi-finals by Sonya Moomaw, a former student of CCM Prep’s Junior Strings Program. Based in Detroit, the Sphinx Organization is a nationwide social justice organization which fosters the talents of Black and Latinx string players and promotes diversity in classical music.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there have been more than 630 whooping cough cases in Ohio this year. That’s nearly six times the number the state experienced in all of last year- and it is by far more cases than any other state has had this year. As an aspiring power engineer, University of Cincinnati student Matt Smeal hopes to contribute to a more sustainable world by working towards better energy solutions. Smeal is a fifth-year electrical engineering student at the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS) specializing in electric energy systems with a minor in environmental studies. Currently, he serves as vice president for Clean Up Cincy, a volunteer litter clean-up organization, and is a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity and Theta Tau engineering fraternity. He is also one of the first students to enroll in CEAS’s new Master of Engineering in Sustainable Energy, through the ACCEND program. ACCEND enables undergraduate students to earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees concurrently.

The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music congratulates Steven Cahn, Professor of Music Theory, on his receipt of the prestigious 2023 Outstanding Publication Award. Representing the highest honor awarded by the Society for Music Theory, this distinction was given to Cahn’s recent article “Schoenberg, Al-Kindī, and the Unbound Braid: A Rendezvous in Barcelona a Thousand Years in the Making” (Musical Quarterly, vol. 104, nos. 3–4, 2021).
