UC researcher's study finds link between childhood trauma, homelessness

Experiencing hardships including domestic violence, discrimination, high levels of violent crime in a community or chronic poverty as a child could make a person more likely to become homeless. The more adverse childhood experiences that a person has, the higher the risk could be. That's according to research from Edson Chipalo, PhD, an assistant professor in the University of Cincinnati's College of Allied Health Sciences. The study was published recently in the journal Child Indicators Research.

UC mentor program hosts laptop giveaway

Students from the University of Cincinnati's College of Medicine recently gathered for a night of celebration as they reunited with the children they have been mentoring through the UC Med Mentors program. The event marked the end of the school year for Cincinnati Public Schools and included the distribution of laptops to the kids as they head into summer break.

UC study: Many seniors fear cataract surgery

Cataract surgery is one of the most foolproof procedures in medicine, with a success rate as high as 95%. Nevertheless, many seniors don’t get cataract surgery because they fear losing their sight, University of Cincinnati College of Medicine researchers reported recently in the journal Clinical Ophthalmology. The UC study was recently featured in U.S. News & World Report.

Students are spending the summer researching cures

Siobain Knox and Eric Kniffen are biology students who plan to work in the medical field to help improve and possibly save lives. They are both getting hands-on experience this summer through two separate, highly competitive research fellowships with area hospitals.
