The University of Cincinnati has launched its new School of Environmental Studies and Sustainability (SEaS) within the College of Arts & Sciences. “The faculty who worked to create a new unit for environmental studies were driven by the desire to improve curriculum, including adding new degrees, as well as increasing research opportunities,” says professor David Stradling, interim director of SEaS.

Toward that end, University of Cincinnati students, working through the Bearcat Promise Career Studio, serve as Peer Career Coaches, mentoring students with advice for building resumés and cover letters, interviewing, navigating career platforms such as LinkedIn and Handshake, and upcoming virtual career fairs. The Bearcat Promise Career Studio, opened in 2019 in UC’s Tangeman University Center, offers full-service job search coaching to students seeking their next step out of college. The Cincinnati Museum Center officially opened Maya: The Exhibition last week, and with it a hands-on companion exhibit developed by an interdisciplinary team of Maya experts from the University of Cincinnati College of Arts and Sciences. Originally slated for a March 14 opening, the exhibits were shuttered until late this month after the state lockdown resulting from the novel coronavirus pandemic. In its U.S. premiere, the exhibit features more than 300 original objects—from massive, carved-stone slabs to elaborate jade jewelry to tools and everyday items—that explore Maya culture. From 1000 BC to 1500 AD, Maya civilization spanned the jungles of Mexico, Guatemala and Belize, noted for its innovations in science, agriculture, astronomy and mathematics.

A multidisciplinary team of researchers from the University of Cincinnati discovered evidence of a sophisticated filtration system in the ancient Maya city of Tikal in what is now northern Guatemala.

Researchers at the University of Cincinnati say Tikal’s reservoirs — critical sources of city drinking water — were lined with trees and wild vegetation that would have provided scenic natural beauty in the heart of the ancient Maya city. UC developed a novel system to analyze ancient plant DNA in the sediment of Tikal’s temple and palace reservoirs to identify more than 30 species of trees, grasses, vines and flowering plants that lived along its banks more than 1,000 years ago. Their findings painted a picture of a lush, wild oasis.

Have you ever thought about thinking? Or have you been interested in how the brain works and makes us function? What about how the brain makes us behave? If you have, the neuroscience program at UC’s College of Arts & Sciences may be the right major for you. Neuroscience, by definition, is the study of the nervous system. While it is based on the nervous system, neuroscience includes many disciplines like physiology, anatomy, molecular biology, computer science and mathematical modeling. UC is one of the few schools in Ohio that offers a comprehensive major in neuroscience, and many students go on to careers in medicine, pharmaceutical or biotech research, or clinical psychology, to name a few. The neuroscience program in A&S has three focus areas: Brain, Mind & Behavior (thinking about thinking); Neurobiology (how the brain works); and Neuropsychology (how the brain makes us behave). Each focus area is a four-year program that confers a bachelor’s of science degree.
