This spring's Global Technical Workforce course in the University of Cincinnati's College of Engineering and Applied Science offered students in technical fields a chance to work virtually with a class of French students and travel to France or Ghana to build career "soft skills" that complement their technical skills.

As an aspiring power engineer, University of Cincinnati student Matt Smeal hopes to contribute to a more sustainable world by working towards better energy solutions. Smeal is a fifth-year electrical engineering student at the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS) specializing in electric energy systems with a minor in environmental studies. Currently, he serves as vice president for Clean Up Cincy, a volunteer litter clean-up organization, and is a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity and Theta Tau engineering fraternity. He is also one of the first students to enroll in CEAS’s new Master of Engineering in Sustainable Energy, through the ACCEND program. ACCEND enables undergraduate students to earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees concurrently.

For University of Cincinnati aerospace engineering student Madison Byrd, her final co-op rotation was noteworthy for more than one reason. Byrd's co-op with Alaska Airlines marked both her final rotation as an undergraduate student and the first UC student to work for the West Coast airline.

Even as a toddler, Emma Vail enjoyed figuring out how things work. The University of Cincinnati engineering student finished two co-op rotations for Honda Motor Co. and works on Formula One cars as part of Bearcats Motorsports.

Hyojung Kim, University of Cincinnati chemical engineering student, spent a semester on co-op in Idaho Falls working at the Idaho National Laboratory. As one of the largest co-op employers in the region and a leading provider of innovative technologies for the treatment of Atrial Fibrillation and other related conditions, AtriCure, Inc. is also one of the largest co-op employers for students at the University of Cincinnati. In fact, they are the number one co-op employer for biomedical engineering students at the College of Engineering and Applied Science. Co-op is integrated into all CEAS undergraduate programs, enabling students to alternate semesters in the classroom with semesters of full-time, paid, co-op work.
