UC’s Olympic poetry in motion

Five former University of Cincinnati athletes and one current second-year student prepare to compete in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics in July and August, representing four nations in five athletic competitions. Former Bearcats include Annette Echikunwoke, hammer throw (Nigeria); Vanessa Gilles, women's soccer (Canada); Nate Fish, baseball (Israel); Jordan Thompson, volleyball (U.S.) and Lewis Johnson (NBC Sports TV broadcaster). Lawrence Sapp, second-year UC student will compete in the Paralympic swim competition in late August.

A century-old love affair with the Bearcat

The Bearcat mascot is probably the most recognizable ambassador for goodwill and school spirit at the University of Cincinnati. The term “UC Bearcat” dates back to 1914 and seems to have first appeared in the campus newspaper following a football game between UC and the University of Kentucky Wildcats. The Cincinnati Enquirer recounts the tradition.

Bearcat nominated for Mascot Hall of Fame

The University of Cincinnati's Bearcat mascot has been nominated for the Mascot Hall of Fame’s 2023 class. WLWT reports that Bearcat is one of 18 nominated mascots recognized for demonstrating a major impact on their sport, groundbreaking performances, a unique, fun and memorable character design and other criteria.

UC alumni, fans engage in 'Crosstown Tip-off'

A "tip war" broke out in Cincinnati in January, with UC and Xavier fans topping each other's generous tips at local restaurants. In just one month, more than $34,000 has been raised to support area restaurant workers hurt by the pandemic.
