Yuqian Zhang, a doctoral graduate of the University of Cincinnati in electrical engineering, has focused her research on establishing innovative lab-on-a-chip devices for the rapid and sensitive detection of biomarkers for early disease diagnosis and prognosis. As she completes her degree in December, Zhang is being celebrated as the Graduate Student Engineer of the Month by UC’s College of Engineering and Applied Science. Since coming to UC in 2015, Zhang has worked under the guidance of Leyla Esfandiari, assistant professor of biomedical and electrical engineering, in the Integrative Biosensing Lab.

More than 13 years ago, Jim Goetz, BSEE ’88, anonymously set up an award program benefiting University of Cincinnati College of Engineering and Applied Science students. He quietly named the awards after his beloved grandmother, Mae, and favorite UC professor, Thomas Mantei, PhD, wanting to assist high-achieving students in electrical engineering, computer engineering and computer science programs.

The University of Cincinnati has a longstanding presence in the Formula Society of Automotive Engineers (FSAE) competition. For several decades, UC students have built Formula and BAJA style cars to race and compete against schools nationwide at various competitions. However, with the emergence and growth in popularity of electric cars, one student set out to make UC's very first electric vehicle team. Bearcat Electric Vehicle (BEV) was founded by UC alumnus Sagar Tawari, during his time as a student. In the 2019-2020 academic year, Tiwari recruited members and created the university's first all-electric formula racing team.

More than 100 years ago, cooperative education (co-op) was invented at the University of Cincinnati's College of Engineering and Applied Science. Since then, UC has spent the last century fine-tuning and improving the program. The Global Research Labs Program is one of the most recent advancements in co-op opportunities for students.
