UC professors named scientific society fellows
AAAS society honors researchers for groundbreaking research
Three University of Cincinnati professors were honored by the largest general scientific society in the United States. The UC researchers were named American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Fellows, a distinguished lifetime honor within the scientific community.

The honorees include from UC's College of Arts and Sciences, Carlton Brett, PhD, a professor in the department of geosciences, and George Uetz, PhD, a biological sciences professor. Dionysios Dionysiou, PhD, a professor of environmental engineering in the College of Engineering and Applied Science, was honored posthumously. Dionysiou died in November 2023.
“AAAS is one of those very well-known, well-respected societies. To be elected a Fellow is a prestigious honor in someone's career,” said Patrick Limbach, PhD, UC's vice president for research. “I've been privileged to know all three in the 2023 class. They're part of the legacy of groundbreaking research in their disciplines that exists here at UC.”
Dionysios Dionysiou
Brett’s research involves paleontology, sedimentary geology and relating regional and global changes in sea level, climate and the carbon cycle. He has been a member of UC’s department of geosciences for 26 years.
Uetz has researched the ecological and behavioral aspects of colonial spiders with a focus on multimodal communication in wolf spiders. He has served as an educator at UC for nearly 50 years in the biological sciences department.
Dionysiou, who died Nov. 20, 2023, developed technologies and strategies to identify, monitor and treat water pollutants and toxins. He was an environmental engineering professor at UC for 23 years.
George Uetz
The 2023 class of Fellows is composed of 502 scientists, engineers and innovators across 24 AAAS disciplinary sections.
"As we celebrate the 150th anniversary of the AAAS Fellows Program, AAAS is proud to recognize the newly elected individuals,” said Sudip S. Parikh, AAAS chief executive officer. “This year’s class embodies scientific excellence, fosters trust in science throughout the communities they serve and leads the next generation of scientists while advancing scientific achievements.”
The new Fellows will receive a certificate and a gold and blue rosette pin to commemorate their election and will be celebrated at a forum on Sept. 21.

UC professor joins Ohio environmental advisory council

Lilit Yeghiazarian, associate professor of environmental engineering at the University of Cincinnati, was invited to join Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost’s scientific advisory council. The 13-member council includes leading researchers representing nine Ohio universities who will advise the attorney general and his team on current environmental issues and pinpoint areas of potential future impact in Ohio.
UC faculty, grads win prestigious international research prize

A University of Cincinnati engineering professor and five of his students will receive a prestigious international award for their work studying ways to address water pollution. The Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water will be awarded to UC College of Engineering and Applied Science distinguished research professor Dionysios Dionysiou and his student research team.
