Computer appreciation class highlights technology’s impact on daily life

Ever wonder how everyday technology works? Your phone? Gaming systems? Search? A new University of Cincinnati course offered this fall, ‘CS-CA1001: Computer Appreciation: Thinking and Creating Like a Computer Scientist,’ is designed to give students of all majors an introduction into the field of computer science. The goal of the course is to demystify various aspects of computer science, including how computing machines are harnessed to solve problems in game playing, discover information, and control simple robots. The course will also cover the implications of computing technologies on safety, security, and ethics.
Engineering student aims to develop a more sustainable world

As an aspiring power engineer, University of Cincinnati student Matt Smeal hopes to contribute to a more sustainable world by working towards better energy solutions. Smeal is a fifth-year electrical engineering student at the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS) specializing in electric energy systems with a minor in environmental studies. Currently, he serves as vice president for Clean Up Cincy, a volunteer litter clean-up organization, and is a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity and Theta Tau engineering fraternity. He is also one of the first students to enroll in CEAS’s new Master of Engineering in Sustainable Energy, through the ACCEND program. ACCEND enables undergraduate students to earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees concurrently.
The University of Cincinnati has a student-run formula electric racing team

The University of Cincinnati has a longstanding presence in the Formula Society of Automotive Engineers (FSAE) competition. For several decades, UC students have built Formula and BAJA style cars to race and compete against schools nationwide at various competitions. However, with the emergence and growth in popularity of electric cars, one student set out to make UC's very first electric vehicle team. Bearcat Electric Vehicle (BEV) was founded by UC alumnus Sagar Tawari, during his time as a student. In the 2019-2020 academic year, Tiwari recruited members and created the university's first all-electric formula racing team.
UC Blue Ash offers new program in high-demand medical specialty

The University of Cincinnati Blue Ash College is offering a new online program that prepares students to earn a certificate in a high-demand medical specialty in just one year.
