When the University of Cincinnati opened the doors of its Esports Innovation Lab in 2022, it was billed as a multipurpose space where students, researchers and companies could collaborate in an innovative environment. Equipped with state-of-the-art computers, the lab was designed as multipurpose space for hosting games, corporate trainings and team-building activities.

Armed with a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Cincinnati's College of Arts and Sciences, a minor in biology and a certificate in medical humanities, Next Innovation Scholar Lily Stewart stands poised to illuminate a path forward to positive change through her written word. She heads to Boston this fall to pursue a master’s degree in science writing from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The buzz of excitement was evident on May 6 and 7 as 90 students gathered from nine participating high schools across the region and competed in the Southwest Ohio Esports Regional Tournament. The University of Cincinnati partnered with Esports Ohio to host the tournament at the UC Esports Lab inside the 1819 Innovation Hub.

Charting a new course in her major, a University of Cincinnati alumna, Haley Rich, ultimately paved the way to her dream job with Kaleidoscope Innovation. This spring, Rich obtained her Bachelor of Science in industrial design from the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP). She credited her career opportunity with the Blue Ash, Ohio, company with her experiences as a UC NEXT Innovation Scholar (NIS).

Raised in the Queen City, Joel Engelhardt began college out of state but returned in 2022 to study in the University of Cincinnati’s Carl H. Lindner College of Business. At a Cincinnati Innovation District (CID) career fair, Engelhardt met Jesse Lawrence, director of partner success at the UC 1819 Innovation Hub. While serving as a co-op student this spring, Engelhardt had the chance to blend his skills in operations management, research and software development to create customized solutions for strategic partners.
