Alumnus Harry Sparks is the ultimate go-to guy. An architecture graduate (‘67 ), he has built or remodeled countless retail institutions (think Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s and Home Depot), casinos, hotels and even the famous Rabbit Hash, Kentucky, General Store, where the tiny town has a dog as its mayor. But that’s just been his day job. After hours, Harry has spent the last 60 years as one of country music’s premier luthiers. Superstars like Vince Gill and Sam Bush come to Harry for acoustic instrument work.

Entrepreneurship education helps undergraduates cultivate an innovative mindset while learning practical skills for business success. Including students in the broader entrepreneurial-university ecosystem can foster mutually beneficial relationships among students and the local business community. That’s the conclusion drawn by University of Cincinnati authors of a chapter in a new book on entrepreneurship.

At the University of Cincinnati, our faculty, staff and students are driven each day to solve problems that matter. Creating new products and services is the process of innovation. Transferring the resulting intellectual property from the creator to a company that can develop the idea is the process of technology transfer.

Starting a new business is a challenge even in a good year. During periods of high inflation, new businesses can combat financial uncertainty by focusing on what they can control — creating value for the customer. The bottom line: If your product or service is valuable enough, especially in uncertain times, customers will sacrifice in other ways to buy it.
