CCM Play Series opens with Shakespeare's 'The Winter's Tale'

“The Winter’s Tale” is one of Shakespeare’s great late romances, full of magic and hope

CCM's Play Series opens with William Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale, presented Oct. 3-5, 2024, in Patricia Corbett Theater. A jealous king, a betrayed queen, a lost daughter and a fairytale ending. The Winter’s Tale is one of Shakespeare’s great late romances, full of magic and hope. Tickets on sale now through the CCM Box Office!

Starring CCM Acting students and featuring the designs and creations of CCM Theatre Design and Production students, The Winter's Tale is directed by Susan Felder. A passionate drama and gentle comedy, the play shares a tale of love and redemption. Blinded by jealousy, King Leontes publicly accuses his wife, Hermione, of an affair with his best friend, Polixenes. Leontes learns of Hermione's extraordinary loyalty, but it’s too late — his cruel actions set off an unlikely chain of events that ripple into the next generation.

"The themes of redemption are strong," Felder says. "In our time of cancel culture, the possibility of being forgiven and to forgive is timely. The “thaw” of this attitude is brought to life through the seasons of the play — winter into spring."

The first act of the play is set in 1895, and the second act is set years later in 1910. The old vestiges of restrictive Victorian ideology give way to a more free-thinking party atmosphere with singing and dancing.

Felder praises the student actors and designers working on the play. Describing the rehearsals as "spectacular" and "tears and laughter" are guaranteed. The production has "more costumes and wigs than the Acting Department has seen in years" and the set "is something out of Grimms fairy tales."

CCM's Play Series presents The Winter's Tale on Oct. 3-5, 2024, in Patricia Corbett Theater. Tickets are on sale now through the CCM Box Office.
