What do students learn in a class about Taylor Swift?

UC’s Taylor Swift themed courses are robust: One on writing, one on philosophy and one on music

In an article in The Cincinnati Enquirer, reporter Madeline Mitchell covers the impact of phenom Taylor Swift on academia, specifically in the Ohio Valley.

According to the article, New York University held the first Swift-themed class in 2022, and others followed suit — to include the University of Cincinnati and other regional institutions of higher education.

The first course at UC, a general music course at UC’s College Conservatory of Music (CCM), came about in spring 2023. It was the brainchild of Annie Barr McAllister, adjunct professor of general studies at CCM.  Courses in English and philosophy followed in fall 2024.

In the introduction to philosophy course, taught by Melissa Jaquart, students explore the philosophical questions Swift poses in her music and in life.

The course is relatable for students and the curriculum is guided by a student advisory board.

"Everybody all around us is a philosopher and is asking interesting philosophical questions all the time," Jacquart told the Enquirer.
