CCM Jazz Orchestra welcomes New Orleans trumpeter in Oct. 30 concert

Guest artist Ashlin Parker joins the CCM Jazz Orchestra for "To Be or Not to Bop"

Story by CCM PR Graduate Assistant Lucy Evans

To Be or Not to Bop — that is the question CCM Jazz Orchestra asks in their next concert on at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, in Corbett Auditorium. Featuring guest trumpeter Ashlin Parker, the concert celebrates Bebop, the musical style that revolutionized American jazz in the mid 20th century. Tickets are on sale now through the CCM Box Office.

Beginning in the 1940s, jazz artists began playing compositions with fast tempos, complex chord progressions and virtuosic improvisation. Pioneers like saxophonist Charlie Parker, pianist Thelonious Monk, and trumpeters Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie popularized the style, which was radically different than the previous era’s big band swing.

Guest artist Ashlin Parker joins the CCM Jazz Orchestra for the concert. A versatile jazz trumpeter based in New Orleans, Ashlin Parker is sought after for big band, small ensemble, and solo performances. His playing has been heard around the world, including South America, Africa, Europe, Asia and Australia. Parker leads the Trumpet Mafia and plays regularly with ensembles in New Orleans, such as the Ellis Marsalis QuintetThe New Orleans Jazz Orchestra. He has appeared with legendary artists Aretha Franklin, Ellis Marsalis, Jason Marsalis, Leroy Jones, Dr. John, the O’Jays and more. A Grammy Award-winning artist, Parker has played on more than 30 albums with several featured solos.

This isn’t Parker’s first appearance with the CCM Jazz Orchestra. In March of 2023, Parker joined CCM’s big band for a Mardi Gras concert at Cincinnati’s National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. A celebration of New Orleans Mardi Gras, the concert was a companion to the Freedom Center’s Black History Month programming.

Don’t miss the chance to see Ashlin Parker and the CCM Jazz Orchestra reunite for an evening of high-energy hits by Dizzie Gillespie, Charlie Parker and more at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30. Buy tickets online
