How to teach your kids to care about other people

Education expert Laura Dell cited in HuffPost article on teaching children empathy

Laura Dell, an assistant professor at the University of Cincinnati’s School of Education, was interviewed by HuffPost for her insights into teaching children empathy.

“Before children can identify and empathize with other people’s feelings, they need to understand how to process their own feelings,” Dell explained. “Once they can identify their own emotion, they’re better able to develop those self-regulation skills to control their own emotions ― and then take the next step to understand the emotions of others.”

The article focused on ways to teach children emotional literacy in a technology driven world.

On faculty at UC since 2008, Dell previously worked for CET, PBS in Cincinnati, as a producer of educational media. Educational design projects include curriculum guides, videos, museum exhibits, websites, and software designed for classroom use. Dell is also an experienced science educator who has worked at the Cincinnati Zoo, Orlando Science Center, Cincinnati Parks and Cincinnati Museum Center.
