CCM Winds students perform in double-feature concerts with Mark Davis Scatterday
The CCM Wind Ensemble and Wind Symphony Chamber Winds perform on Nov. 20 and Nov. 21
Story by CCM PR Graduate Assistant Lucy Evans
The CCM Wind Ensemble and CCM Wind Symphony perform two programs of exciting repertoire over the span of two days in November— both performances feature guest conductor Mark Davis Scatterday.
The November 20 “Masterworks” concert features the full Wind Ensemble in large-scale pieces ranging from Bernstein to Milhaud. The November 21 concert features the CCM Wind Symphony Chamber Winds, performing intimate selections from Mozart, Stravinsky and Grainger. Tickets are on sale now through the CCM Box Office.
Bernstein’s rousing Slava! kicks off the first concert on November 20. Subtitled “A Political Overture,” the piece was composed to mark Mstislav Rostropovich’s first concert as the Music Director of the National Symphony Orchestra. A mix of spirited American marches and contemplative contemporary pieces round out the program, which ends with Darius Milhaud’s Suite Française, a tour of France’s various musical styles and regions.
“This work is wonderfully crafted, complete with a variety of textures and colors that really showcase the expressive capacity of the wind band,” says Kevin Michael Holzman, Division Head of Ensembles and Conducting; Director and Associate Professor of Wind Studies at CCM.
The November 21 concert features the Wind Symphony Chamber Winds, a small group of players selected from the larger ensemble. “This gives the students the opportunity to perform and rehearse conducted chamber music, which is vital to the development of a well-rounded musician,” says Holzman.
The second concert takes its name from Mozart’s Gran Partita Serenade, among the longest pieces the composer wrote for instrumental ensembles. The composition prominently features the basset horn, an instrument Mozart used in many of his works, notably his Requiem and the opera Die Zauberflote. “I certainly would not miss out on an opportunity to hear this masterpiece,” says Holzman of the rarely performed Gran Partita.
The two concerts are part of a visit by guest conductor Mark Davis Scatterday, Professor of Conducting at the Eastman School of Music, who taught Holzman during his DMA studies. Scatterday’s time at CCM will include much more than just guest conducting. In addition to the two performances, he will visit the graduate conducting seminar, teach the CCM undergraduate conducting course and participate in a round-table discussion. Scatterday’s residency concludes with the inaugural CCM Fall Conducting Symposium, for which he is the featured clinician.
