Children's Hospital, UC Partner to Provide Increased Access To Research Materials

The libraries of Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC) and the University of Cincinnati (UC) have recently joined forces to provide increased access to research materials for library users at both institutions.

With this partnership, UC Libraries, founding members of OhioLINK, the nationally acclaimed consortium of 82 Ohio college and university libraries and the State Library of Ohio, are extending “OhioLINK affiliated institution” status to CCHMC. This new endeavor, a direct result of the longstanding educational and research collaboration of UC and CCHMC, will provide CCHMC researchers and staff with access to the more than 31 million items held by OhioLINK libraries, including thousands of electronic journals and over one hundred electronic databases. In turn, OhioLINK members throughout the state will now have access to the unique pediatric medical journals and books held by CCHMC libraries.

“This new partnership with UC will allow Children’s Hospital to greatly expand our research capabilities by providing access to materials previously unobtainable, thus enabling our doctors and staff to apply this greater knowledge when helping patients,” said Tom Boat, Director of Children’s Hospital Research Foundation and Interim Provost for Health Affairs.

“Children’s Hospital and the University of Cincinnati have long enjoyed a strong and collaborative relationship, which will be strengthened further with this new tie,” said Anthony J. Perzigian, Senior Vice President and Provost for Baccalaureate and Graduate Education.

UC and CCHMC library staff are currently at work on the details and technical components involved in the full implementation of resource-sharing between their institutions and throughout OhioLINK. Work is expected to be complete by mid-June.

“We are excited about the opportunities and benefits all OhioLINK users will enjoy as a result of our affiliation with CCHMC,” said UC Dean and University Librarian Victoria A. Montavon. Her colleague, Roger Guard, Assistant Senior Vice President for UC Medical Center Academic Information Technology & Libraries, added, “Because the College of Medicine’s Department of Pediatrics is located at Children’s Hospital, making OhioLINK resources available to faculty there is crucial. The value of OhioLINK to our faculty cannot be overestimated.”
