UC s Filak Named Educator of Year by Ohio Academy of Family Physicians
The Ohio Academy of Family Physicians has named Andrew T. Filak, Jr., MD, the 2003 Educator of the Year. Dr. Filak is a family physician and associate dean for medical education at the UC College of Medicine.
It is wonderful to be recognized by my colleagues in family medicine, said Dr. Filak. This builds upon a long tradition of the importance of family medicine in Cincinnati and at the UC College of Medicine.
The UC Department of Family Medicine was formed in 1974, making UC one of the first in the United States to introduce a family medicine residency program. Jeffrey Susman, MD, is the current chair of the Department of Family Medicine.
Dr. Filak graduated from George Washington University School of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences in Washington, D.C. He completed his residency at UC in 1981. Dr. Filak also holds the position of associate chief of staff for graduate medical education at the University Hospital, and assistant vice president for graduate medical education for the Health Alliance of Greater Cincinnati.
Dr. Filak has professional memberships in the Southwestern Ohio Society of Family Physicians, Ohio Academy of Family Physicians, American Academy of Family Physicians, American Medical Association, Cincinnati Academy of Medicine, and the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine.
Cincinnati is truly the home of family medicine, said Dr. Filak. I greatly appreciate the support of my colleagues and friends within the College of Medicine and the Department of Family Medicine, and am in good company with two previous Educators of the Year on UCs full-time faculty, Drs. Rick Ricer and Jeff Heck.
The Ohio Academy of Family Physicians is a professional, non-profit medical association of more than 4,400 family physicians, family practice residents and medical students. For more information, visit http://www.ohioafp.org.
