New Program Draws On Ethnic Diversity
The University of Cincinnati is offering a new undergraduate certificate program that may come in handy in a business and economic world that increasingly requires workers to be aware of the nations different ethnic cultures. The new certificate in American Ethnic Studies will draw upon the expertise and course offerings of more than 45 UC faculty members.
I think that today more and more we are examining what makes a unified culture and what doesnt, says Edgar Slotkin, the new certificates program director. The whole American enterprise is one that grows out of the ability to celebrate differences and to see that this is a strength, not a weakness. This course of study will examine the various American attitudes towards ethnicity which is, after all, for many people a basic attribute of their identity.
The interdisciplinary program offers courses in literature, sociology, anthropology, drama, health, history, music and more. While the program is based within the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences, its course offerings will draw upon a variety of colleges including the College-Conservatory of Music, College of Medicine, the College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning, and the College of Education, Criminal Justice and Human Services
