UC Students Reach for the Stars

The Department of Physics at the University of Cincinnati is providing students with a new opportunity to expand their knowledge of the universe. Undergrads working towards a Bachelor of Science in Physics now can opt for a concentration in astrophysics, the study of the structure and evolution of the universe.

To satisfy the requirements of the concentration the department is offering new fundamental and advanced courses in astronomy and astrophysics. Astronomy is mostly observational, tracking the movement of planets and stars, while astrophysics uses physics to calculate the physical and dynamical properties of celestial objects.

According to Margaret Hanson, associate professor of physics at UC, the department has seen an increase in students interested in astronomy and astrophysics spurred by the recent success of astronomical projects like the Hubble space telescope.
Hanson said the new area satisfies two groups of students: those that are just gung-ho on astronomy and want to learn more, and others that are preparing for graduate school and a career in astrophysics. "By adding the new concentration I believe we'll double the number of physics majors."

More than half of UC's students receiving a bachelor's degree in physics go on to graduate or professional school. Hanson said, "Most that go to grad school go into physics or astrophysics, but many move into law, medicine, engineering or education."

Zachary Jarrell came to the University of Cincinnati in 2019 to pursue a degree in statistics. In 2023, he graduated with a Bachelor’s in Journalism. For many undergraduates, the journey through college rarely takes the expected track. Detours happen, and majors change. When plans switch up, it can be helpful to a student’s success to find support. For Jarrell, it was the people he worked alongside in the journalism department who helped him on his journey. It has left a lasting impression on his life so far, guiding him to multiple internships as an undergraduate, real-world experience in prominent news outlets, and eventually a successful career in the highly competitive field of journalism.
