Nancy Bauman, President's Quality Service Award Winner
Applications for graduate studies in the
are up, and one of the reasons for the growing interest is Nancy Bauman. In two years on the job, she has reorganized and improved the departments record-keeping, created fun-to-read course description booklets and established new databases for tracking incoming and continuing students.
Both grad students and faculty alike appreciate her professionalism and competency, not just in handling paperwork, but also in finding answers to almost any question about payroll, tuition waivers, financial aid, credit hours, adding and dropping classes, adding and dropping students from teachers classes, scheduling dissertation defenses and much more. Nancy turns the main office into a one-stop shop, says Jon Kamholtz,, associate professor of English in the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences. Anything she can handle, she will handle and will do it right, once and with flair.
Behind Baumans efficiency is an awareness that behind every piece of paper or deadline stands a real person. She willingly spends time with each individual. Nancys presence positively brightens up the English department, says PhD grad Cate Marvin. Adds another faculty admirer: She never seems harried, but always has time to answer questions or find one more piece of information. Students often stop by her desk just to touch base. Incoming grad students sing Nancys praises and indicate she influenced their decisions to come to UC.
On top of all this, Bauman now fields nearly all of the departments incoming main office phone calls and has volunteered to maintain the departments Web site. Nancy attributes her success in the English department to the people who surround her, especially her boss, friend and mentor, Geri Hinkle-Wesseling. "The students, faculty and staff are absolutely wonderful. I came into the department expecting an office and found a second home."
