News Record Open House Seeks Former Staffers

With the inauguration of a new president and the long-awaited opening of MainStreet, May 21 will be a newsworthy day at UC. So perhaps it’s fitting that the call is going out to all former staffers of The News Record, UC’s student paper and source for campus news, to visit the newspaper’s new Swift Hall home on that historic day.

“The names of past News Record staff members emerge when we review past editions,” said faculty adviser Al Salvato. “Today’s staff members often turn first to the staff boxes to see who once held their jobs, and wonder where their News Record experiences have taken them.”

The May 21 celebration on campus seemed a perfect time for a News Record Open House to bring past and present News Record people together. The offices, which relocated to the 500 level of Swift Hall in one of the earlier MainStreet-related moves, will be open from 4 to 7 p.m. that day.

“We have a lot to show off,” Salvato said. “We won a recent national award as ‘Best Newspaper’ from the Society of Professional Journalists, and our new facilities include a new newsroom, photo department and business offices. Plus we’ll have refreshments for our visitors, and best of all, the opportunity to meet many of our current staff members.

“Even though May 21 will be a day to remember, we want to talk about future events that bring together current and former staff members of The News Record,” Salvato said. “We’d like to hear your thoughts about a possible reunion of News Record alums this fall, perhaps during Homecoming festivities. And, of course, we look forward to hearing all the great stories about working for The News Record over the years.”

All alumni, whether they’re former News Record staffers or just News Record readers, are invited to check out the paper online at www.newsrecord.uc.edu.
