McMicken Alumni Are Proof; Liberal Arts Degree Goes Far

What can you do with a liberal arts degree? You could become:

  • a reproductive health specialist
  • mayor of a major city
  • one of the most-quoted experts on economic trends
  • a professor at Oxford University
  • vice president of a high-tech company

Skeptical? In that case, the following graduates of the University of Cincinnati McMicken College can attest to the value of a liberal arts degree:

  • NeeOo W. Chin, M.D., whose 1977 psychology degree led to a career in medicine and directorship of the Greater Cincinnati Institute for Reproductive Health.
  • Michael B. Coleman, also from UC's class of 1977, now Mayor of Columbus, Ohio.
  • Stuart G. Hoffman, who earned economics degrees in 1973 and 1975, now Senior Vice President and Chief Economist for PNC Bank. Hoffman has been quoted more than 300 times by publications including The Wall Street Journal, New York Times and Business Week, and is a regular guest on CNBC and CNN-fn.
  • Donna C. Kurtz, Beazley Archivist and Fellow of Wolfson College at Oxford University, who earned a degree in classics in 1964.
  • William T. Weaver, 1976 political science graduate, now Vice President & General Manager, U.S. West Region Sales for Hewlett-Packard.

These distinguished alumni will be recognized Tuesday, May 25, at the McMicken College Awards Dinner, to be held 5:45 p.m. at UC's Myers Alumni Center. Keynote speaker for the event and recipient of the McMicken College Distinguished Leadership Award is Spencer R. Crew, executive director and CEO of Cincinnati?s National Underground Railroad Freedom Center.

Zachary Jarrell came to the University of Cincinnati in 2019 to pursue a degree in statistics. In 2023, he graduated with a Bachelor’s in Journalism. For many undergraduates, the journey through college rarely takes the expected track. Detours happen, and majors change. When plans switch up, it can be helpful to a student’s success to find support. For Jarrell, it was the people he worked alongside in the journalism department who helped him on his journey. It has left a lasting impression on his life so far, guiding him to multiple internships as an undergraduate, real-world experience in prominent news outlets, and eventually a successful career in the highly competitive field of journalism.
