P&G Fund Awards $1 Million To Teacher Quality Partnership
The Procter & Gamble Fund has awarded $1 million to the Teacher Quality Partnership (TQP), a collaborative effort co-led by the University of Cincinnati, University of Dayton and The Ohio State University, including the 50 Ohio universities offering teacher education programs. The partnership aims to discover how teacher preparation impacts student achievement.
"The study will seek ways to improve student performance in grades Prekindergarten-12 a major concern nationwide," according to Dr. Lawrence J. Johnson, co-chair of TQP and dean of the College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services at UC.
Findings from the TQP research will inform the work of teachers, teacher educators, education and community leaders and policy-makers at all levels in strengthening student learning through teacher education and professional development.
TQP is proposing a five-year study to examine the preparation, in-school support and subsequent effectiveness of teachers in mathematics and English/language arts. The goal is to identify those aspects of teacher preparation that have the strongest effects on performance of students in grades Prekindergarten-12. More than 4,500 Ohio teachers will be surveyed annually for five years as part of the research.
Specifically, the study seeks to answer questions concerning the relationship between teacher personal and professional attributes, components of teacher education programs and school and district factors in supporting the development of new teachers. The study will also answer questions about how teacher preparation programs improve teachers ability to help all students improve their achievement.
