Democrats Hear McMicken Graduate

People attending the Democratic convention thought Michael Coleman was selected to speak to delegates because of his outstanding work as mayor of Columbus. Few probably realized that he has another distinction, that of being a graduate of McMicken College.

Coleman, who is rumored to be a contender for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, earned a BA in political science and later attended the University of Dayton Law School. Last spring he received a Distinguished Alumnus Award at the college’s Annual Awards Dinner.

In 2000, Coleman was elected mayor of Columbus, which he hopes to make “America’s 21st Century City.” Education has played a major role in his vision of designing a model city. He established the city’s first Office of Education, as well as the Mayor’s Educational Council.

Much of his success is attributed to his emphasis on improved safety, job creation, building a vibrant downtown, and creating partnerships to solve community problems. Coleman has also brought innovations to Columbus. The Franklin County Affordable Trust Corporation, Neighborhood Investments Districts, Columbus Downtown Development Corporation, Downtown Resource Center and Neighborhood Pride are only a few of the accomplishments of this exceptional McMicken graduate.
