UC Celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month

The University of Cincinnati will sponsor events to celebrate and educate about National Hispanic Heritage Month Sept. 11-Oct. 13. Discussion forums, literature, film, dance, music and even Spanish lessons for beginners will promote a greater awareness and understanding of the region’s growing and diverse Latino community. Events are free and open to the public.

Sept. 11  – Carthage, Ohio
Noon-10 p.m.
UC Joins Festival Hispano at Su Casa Hispanic Ministry Center
Representatives from the University of Cincinnati’s Office of Admissions and from the student group, Latinos En Accion, will staff an information table and answer questions about planning for college.

Sept. 15-Oct. 15 – Langsam Library
Library Exhibit Highlights Hispanic Authors
The exhibit, sponsored by University Libraries, will be located in the lobby of Langsam Library. The display will feature works of Hispanic writers, including Nobel Prize laureates, as well as the works of creative writers at the University of Cincinnati. The exhibit will also be featured online at the University Libraries Web site.

Hispanic Culture Book Display
UC Bookstores will showcase books by Francisco Jimenez, the nationally honored writer and educator who will be speaking at UC on Oct. 11.

Sept. 21 – McMicken Commons
Noche Latina
5-8 p.m.
The event features a night of Latino culture and celebration with traditional food and music. This is sponsored by Alpha Psi Lambda Fraternity, the nation’s first co-ed Latin fraternity, which is organizing this year at UC.

Sept. 22 – Great Hall, Tangeman University Center (TUC)
Noon-3 p.m.
Club Hispano Game Day
Club Hispano is a UC student organization that unites students who are interested in learning about the Hispanic culture and speaking Spanish. The group is planning a “Build Your Own Quesadilla” game. Using cardboard cutouts of ingredients for a Quesadilla, players will “win” their ingredients by answering questions about Hispanic culture, language and geography. The first players to complete their Quesadilla win a prize.

Hispanic Student Welcome Reception
This reception welcomes new and returning students back to campus and is sponsored by the Office of Ethnic Programs and Services.

The event, sponsored by the student group Latinos En Accion, will feature guest speakers, UC alumni, music, food and door prizes.

Mesa Hispana: (Conversational Spanish)
Students interested in refining their Spanish-speaking skills are welcome to attend, as well as those who are interested in learning the language. The event is sponsored by the UC Department of Romance Languages and Literatures.

The Majority Minority: Growing Latino Population Faces Growing Issues
The forum will feature three guest speakers who are prominent in the local Hispanic community:

• Lieutenant Timothy A. Chesser, Florence Police Department – Chesser originated the Florence Police Department’s Latino Police Academy, which works to educate immigrants about local, state and federal laws.
• Lupe Gonzalez Hoyt, executive director of the Norwood Service League –
  Hoyt will examine health issues affecting the Latino community.
• Victor M. Velez, executive director for the organization, Awareness for Latinos Arriving in the States (ALAS, Inc.). ALAS programs build bridges between the Latin/Hispanic community and other cultures through programs, workshops and presentations. The outreach efforts are geared toward schools, corporations and families. Velez also is program coordinator of Hispanic/Latino Affairs for the Cincinnati Human Relations Commission.

The forum, sponsored by the College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services, will also feature Latin-themed tapas (appetizers).

Latin Dance Lessons
UC student dance instructors Alycea Saldano and Alisha Rojas will be demonstrating and providing instruction for a variety of Latin-themed dance moves. The event is sponsored by UC Resident Education and Development.

Hispanic Market Trends in the Tristate and the Impact on Local Business
Guest speaker is Mike Robinson, president of LaVERDAD Hispanic Marketing Solutions, a Hispanic owned and operated marketing firm in Cincinnati that builds relationships between businesses and the Hispanic market. The event is sponsored by the College of Business.

Oct. 6 – Tangeman University Center Theater
7 p.m.
Movie: Real Women Have Curves
The critically acclaimed film – a coming of age story about a female first generation Mexican-American teenager – won the Dramatic Audience Award at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival. The film will be followed by a discussion led by the UC Women’s Center and the UC Diversity Education program. Admission is free.

Fiesta Latina
The student group Latinos En Accion will host an event featuring traditional folk costumes, art exhibits, food, music and a discussion featuring facts about Latin American countries from Argentina to Venezuela.

Concert Featuring Audrey Luna
Free concert featuring soprano Audrey Luna. Latin-themed musical selections will include Ginastera, Guastavino, Falla, Granados and Revueltas. The event is sponsored by the Institute of Global Studies and Affairs and the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures.

Francisco Jimenez Lecture and Book Signing
Francisco Jimenez’s highly acclaimed books build bridges between cultures. His lecture will be followed by a book signing in the UC Bookstore. Jimenez’s lecture is sponsored by the UC Institute for Global Studies and Affairs, the UC Bookstore and MainStreet.

Bridging the Health Care Gap for the Hispanic Population
The forum, co-sponsored by the Just Community initiative (East Campus) and the UC Medical Center, will examine cultural issues relating to patient care. The featured speakers are:

• Lupe Hoyt, executive director of the Norwood Service League
• Dr. Douglas Rahner, M.D., medical director of the Lincoln Heights Health Care Center, will discuss how physicians can bridge relationships with the Hispanic population as well as challenges relating to the language barrier.
• Liliana Rojas Guyler, UC assistant professor of health promotion (discussion moderator)
