McMicken College prepares for UC|21 Implementation
The University has completed the first phase of its Comprehensive Academic Planning Process. The Technical Report, UC|21: Defining the New Urban Research University, defines the strategies that the university will pursue to achieve its goal of becoming a pre-eminent urban research university. The university is now preparing to move rapidly into the first phase of the implementation of UC|21. All colleges in the university are being called on to create strategic plans that will fully align collegiate goals with UC|21.
To respond to UC|21, McMicken College will be augmenting our existing committees. We are creating a new UC|21 Phase 1 Implementation Team for McMicken College. The teams mission will be to develop and present to the dean a college plan to align the colleges plans, priorities and activities with the six strategic goals of UC|21. This will include preparation of the colleges phase I implementation proposal, which will be submitted by Dean Gould by December 1. The team will include representatives from the college office, Council of Heads, faculty, and staff. Calls for nominations will be forthcoming.
The foundation for our Implementation Teams work will be the colleges Planning and Budget document, prepared for President Zimpher in May, 2004. Faculty, staff, and unit heads will be invited to submit pre-proposals by October 15 for additional initiatives to be considered for inclusion in our Phase I proposal. An announcement containing further details will be distributed soon.
In addition, the colleges standing and ad-hoc committees will all have roles in the colleges implementation of UC|21:
Council of Heads and its Budget & Planning and Governance Committees
Graduate Council
Undergraduate Council
Interdisciplinary Council
Technology Resource Committee
Alternative Delivery & Non-Traditional Instruction Committee

Zachary Jarrell came to the University of Cincinnati in 2019 to pursue a degree in statistics. In 2023, he graduated with a Bachelor’s in Journalism. For many undergraduates, the journey through college rarely takes the expected track. Detours happen, and majors change. When plans switch up, it can be helpful to a student’s success to find support. For Jarrell, it was the people he worked alongside in the journalism department who helped him on his journey. It has left a lasting impression on his life so far, guiding him to multiple internships as an undergraduate, real-world experience in prominent news outlets, and eventually a successful career in the highly competitive field of journalism.
