Dear Colleagues,

The University of Cincinnati is joining with the National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ) to take part in the Walk As One Walk-A-Thon scheduled for Saturday, October 16th.  The NCCJ is a human relations organization dedicated to fighting racism in the United States by promoting understanding and respect among all races, religions, and cultures.  The event raised over $295,000 last year supporting important programs of NCCJ and the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center.

As co-chairs of the Just Community Steering Committee, we are asking you to encourage others to become Walk As One volunteers.  We believe NCCJ's Walk As One is a tangible way to show your support and accept responsibility for a more caring and inclusive community at UC and in Cincinnati.

Last year, UC received the award as the top fund raising school team.  This marks our fourth year of participation and we’re excited that this year’s Walk will commence from the Freedom Center at 10:00 AM.  Bus transportation will be provided to and from campus and will begin transporting walkers at 8:15 AM to downtown and the last bus will return from the Freedom Center at 2:00 PM.  We expect over 500 faculty, staff, and students from UC to take part in the October 16th event.  We need you to help us achieve our goal.  Please encourage members of your department to volunteer for the Walk As One 10K Run.  If you have any questions about the Walk, please contact Deborah Weinstein, Director of Business Affairs, Division of Student Affairs and Services, at 556-4194 or by e-mail at Deborah.Weinstein@uc.edu.

More information about Walk As One and NCCJ programs may be found at the UC Just Community website:  www.uc.edu/justcommunity/walk.  The Walk As One sign-up form can be accessed at this website as well.  We encourage you and members of your department to do your part to make the University and Cincinnati a better place for everyone.

On a blisteringly hot summer day, laughter echoed through the cool, damp basement of the Avondale branch of the Cincinnati Public Library. Young teenagers huddled around a table littered with pencils and paper, rolling dice and bonding over a game of Dungeons & Dragons. University of Cincinnati undergraduate student Charitha Anamala sat behind a trifold card with a blazing red dragon on it, serving as the group’s Dungeon Master (DM) or campaign organizer. Within the fantasy setting she described, it was hard to tell the adventure was a lesson in ethics.

UC language studies program adopts new technologies

July 7, 2025

Cultural immersion is a tried-and-true method for teaching languages. U.S. students travel abroad—to Europe, Latin America, Asia and beyond to take a deep dive into the customs, mores, daily life and conversational language that can be challenging to master from home. For those students who can't take advantage of the study-abroad experience, there's another option to gain the same learnings. At UC, the Curricular Enhancement, Development, Access and Research Language Resource Center (CEDAR) has developed a curriculum that features virtual reality (VR) technology to give students a similar opportunity right in the classroom.
