Alums Honor Demakes Scholars
Six McMicken students recently discovered that there can be advantages not only to being able to boast of exemplary academic, leadership, and community service activities but also to having parents or grandparents who attended UC.
Every fall the UC Alumni Association holds a dinner at which it awards Demakes Legacy Scholarships to outstanding freshmen who are lineal descendents of alumni, and this year McMicken College had six of the 39 recipients: Richard Baudendistel (Elder High School), Kimberly Bauer (William Mason High School), Ashley Bedel (Seton High School), Tyler Buehler (St. Henry High School), Mariel DeMichiei (Napolean High School, Napolean, OH), and Alexander Linser (Madeira Jr. Sr. High School).
The Alumni Association noted, This group of Demakes Legacy Scholars raised the bar for future freshmen. Representing seven different UC colleges, the 2004 honorees carried GPAs of 3.85 on average, scored an average of 28 on the ACT and 1267 on the SAT, and ranked in the top 10% of their high schools classes.
The scholarship program is named for Chris Demakes, who for more than 30 years was deeply involved in alumni affairs and developed a reputation for friendships with both alumni and students. The scholarships are a way of extending that reputation.
High achieving children or grandchildren of lineal alumni who are members of the UC Alumni Association are invited to apply for fall 2005 scholarships by Apr. 1, 2005. Information is available at

UC alum credits journalism program with early success

Zachary Jarrell came to the University of Cincinnati in 2019 to pursue a degree in statistics. In 2023, he graduated with a Bachelor’s in Journalism. For many undergraduates, the journey through college rarely takes the expected track. Detours happen, and majors change. When plans switch up, it can be helpful to a student’s success to find support. For Jarrell, it was the people he worked alongside in the journalism department who helped him on his journey. It has left a lasting impression on his life so far, guiding him to multiple internships as an undergraduate, real-world experience in prominent news outlets, and eventually a successful career in the highly competitive field of journalism.
