Fulbright Visit Highlights First UC Celebration Of International Education Week

The first-ever celebration of International Education Week at the University of Cincinnati from Nov. 15-19 will be highlighted by a visit from the first name in international education.

Harriet Fulbright, president of the Fulbright International Center and a member of the JW Fulbright Foreign Scholarships Board, will visit UC on Tuesday, Nov. 16. She will spend the day meeting with students and faculty who have benefited from Fulbright programs, and will present a 3 p.m. lecture, "Fulbright: His Legacy and Its Relevance Today," in the Max Kade Center on the 7th floor of the Old Chem building.

Mrs. Fulbright is the widow of the late Sen. J. William Fulbright, the founder of the Fulbright Scholarship program. It will mark her first visit to UC.

This year marks the fifth anniversary of the start-up of International Education Week by its sponsors, the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education. This will be the first year that UC will officially participate with a week of planned activities of lectures, concerts and two International Film Festivals – one on the university’s main campus and a second at UC’s Clermont College.

"UC students today have more opportunities for international experiences than ever before," says Susan Bacon, interim director of UC’s Institute of Global Studies and Affairs. "It’s an exciting time, and opportunities are spread across every corner of our campus."

Within the last year alone, an estimated 750 UC students have participated in international education experiences, and the university itself has welcomed for study 1,943 international students.

Among the many students involved in international study right now, UC has five who are abroad on Fulbright Scholarships.

International Education Week at UC will begin with a World Music Concert on Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. in CCM’s Werner Recital Hall. Other highlights include a "World Café" event, featuring international food, on Nov. 17 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on McMicken Commons and a lecture on Nov. 18 at 11 a.m. in the TUC Theater by UC board member Gary Heiman, one of Greater Cincinnati’s most experienced business people in the area of international commerce.
