Award-Winning Young Researcher To Discuss His Work

Milind Jog, UC associate professor of mechanical engineering, will make a public presentation about his research on Thursday, Dec. 2, when he presents the Outstanding Young Investigator Award Lecture. The presentation takes place at 4 p.m. in Room 427 of the Engineering Research Center.

Jog is the 2004 winner of the award, presented by the UC chapter of Sigma Xi, the scientific research society. He was honored for his work in the area of liquid sprays. His talk is titled, "Atomization of Liquid Sheets."

Liquid sprays are encountered in a wide variety of applications, including fuel injection in aircraft engines, water sprays for fire suppresion, production of powders by spray drying and polymeric solution sprays in production of pharmaceuticals products and agricultural sprays. When liquid jets or sheets are injected in air, the interaction between air and liquid at the liquid surface can cause flow instabilities. The instabilities result in liquid sheet breakup and formation of small droplets.

Jog's talk will provide an overview of this process, and results from his UC research will be discussed.

Jog has been at UC since earning his PhD in 1993 from the University of Pennsylvania. He is a past recipient of the CAREER Award and the Research Initiation Award from the National Science Foundation, a faculty achievement award from UC and a college research award for young faculty.
