English Grad Conference Revisits the 1980s
Whether youre interested in high culture or low, the English Graduate Organization will have something to offer at its conference on The 80s in Literature and Culture. The event will be held on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 6-7 in TUC. Registration and continental breakfast will begin at 8:30 a.m. on the fourth floor of TUC.
Concurrent sessions running from 9:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. will appeal to anyone with an interest in the 80s. There will be presentations on Don DeLillo, Reagan in literature and culture, ethnic womens fiction, and British-American cultural exchanges, as well as punk rock, video games, cartoons, and comic books.
Andrew Ross of New York University and Bonnie Dow of the University of Georgia will be keynote speakers. Saturday night dinner will be at 5:30 p.m., followed by an 80s themed reception and evening entertainment in the Banquet Room of the Vernon Manor Hotel.

UC alum credits journalism program with early success

Zachary Jarrell came to the University of Cincinnati in 2019 to pursue a degree in statistics. In 2023, he graduated with a Bachelor’s in Journalism. For many undergraduates, the journey through college rarely takes the expected track. Detours happen, and majors change. When plans switch up, it can be helpful to a student’s success to find support. For Jarrell, it was the people he worked alongside in the journalism department who helped him on his journey. It has left a lasting impression on his life so far, guiding him to multiple internships as an undergraduate, real-world experience in prominent news outlets, and eventually a successful career in the highly competitive field of journalism.
