UC Students and Faculty Organize Benefits for Tsunami Victims

In addition to the university-wide campaign to provide immediate financial relief to tsunami victims in Africa and Asia, the Division of Student Affairs is working with student organizations, including Student Government, to coordinate several projects related to disaster relief. Furthermore, UC College of Medicine faculty also organized a benefit for a medical aid organization.

College of Applied Science
Through Feb. 28

Ten large jars filled with copper, silver and green (coin and bill money) near the coffee station on the second floor of the College of Applied Science’s Administration Building represent a payoff for the victims of the January tsunami in Asia and Africa. Ten departments of the college are waging a “penny war” that began Feb. 1 and continues until Feb. 28. Pennies dropped into one’s own departmental jar means a point scored for one’s own department. Silver coins or bills dropped into a department’s jar means points are deducted for that department.

Student volunteers – dressed in red shirts and blue jeans – greeted fans with collection cans that were labeled for the UC Tsunami Relief Fund. Lucy Croft, director of Student Activities and Leadership Development (SALD), also participated with the 11 student volunteers, including UC Student Body President Justin Shafer, as they greeted the fans in the concourse of Fifth Third Arena.

The UC chapter of Association for India Development, Sri Lankan Students Association, Peace Village, and Just Community held an international cuisine buffet dinner in the ballroom of Music Hall. The event aimed to bring the community together to express solidarity and compassion for the victims and orphans of the tsunami disaster and raise funds to bring light and hope to the lives of thousands of orphaned children and the victims of tsunami.

Raymond Walters College held a special program that included readings of e-mail letters from Tsunami survivors and a reception featuring Asian cuisine. Dr. Thambi-Pillai, UC Medical Transplant Specialist and an administrator with the International Medical Health Organization (IMHO) gave a PowerPoint presentation on the tsunami damage and the work of the IMHO. Total Raised: $800

International Medical Health Organization
Fund-raiser and Dinner

This fund-raiser will benefit the International Medical Health Organization, a non-profit charity. UC faculty organizers include Dr. A. Balasubramaniam (Bala), UC professor of surgery, and Dr. T. Thambi-Pillao (Thav), transplant fellow at the UC College of Medicine. Dr. Thambi packed 20 boxes of medical supplies which were flown to Sri Lanka aboard a flight arranged by philanthropist Carl Lindner III. Total raised: $25,000. Web site: http://www.imhousa.org

Salsa Dance and Fund-raiser

The UC Graduate Student Governance Association and Cultural Connections hold a salsa night with free dance lessons. The groups will accept donations for tsunami relief.
