Good News About Sociology

The sociology department has something to crow about these days. “Report Card on Gender- and Women-Friendly Sociology Departments,” which was written for Sociologists for Women in Society, ranks the department third in the nation in two areas: percentage of full-time faculty who are women and percentage of full-time faculty with research and training specialties in the areas of gender and inequality.

The ranking is especially significant because there are 112 PhD granting sociology departments in the United States and only twelve others have achieved this “seal of approval” on both measures.

Rhys Williams, department head, commented on the honor, “We are pleased to be recognized in this way since the recognition is consistent with the department's long track record of hiring women and studying gender and related issues. The Kunz Center for the Study of Work and Family is evidence of that concern. We will pair with the center and other organizations on campus to sponsor a May 2005 conference, which is tentatively titled “'A Summit on Women's Status in Greater Cincinnati.'”

For many undergraduates, the journey through college rarely takes the expected track. Detours happen, and majors change. When plans switch up, it can be helpful to a student’s success to find support. For Jarrell, it was the people he worked alongside in the journalism department who helped him on his journey. It has left a lasting impression on his life so far, guiding him to multiple internships as an undergraduate, real-world experience in prominent news outlets, and eventually a successful career in the highly competitive field of journalism.
