English Department Writing Contest Awards up to $500 in Individual Prizes

Students may enter the following categories:

UNDERGRADUATE AWARDS 

1. ENGLISH COMPOSITION PRIZE: awarded to the outstanding essay written for a Freshman English class in 2004-2005.

2. HOPTON SHORT STORY PRIZE: awarded to the best short story written by an undergraduate student.

3. ROBINSON ESSAY PRIZE: awarded to the outstanding essay written by an undergraduate student.

4. SHAKESPEARE PRIZE: awarded to the best essay written on Shakespeare by an undergraduate student.

5. BROWNING PRIZE: awarded to the best essay written on the poetry of the Brownings.

6. PLAYWRITING PRIZE: awarded to the best play written by an undergraduate student.

7. ELLISTON/STRAUS/LANZIT PRIZE: awarded to the outstanding group of three to five poems

8. ACADEMY OF AMERICAN POETS PRIZE: awarded for a single poem written by an undergraduate

9. LAFCADIO HEARN JOURNALISM PRIZE: awarded to the outstanding feature article written by an undergraduate student.

10. PROFESSIONAL WRITING PRIZE: awarded for excellence in professional writing by an undergraduate student.

11. HATFIELD SHORT STORY PRIZE: awarded to the outstanding short story written by a graduating senior.

12. STAPLES SENIOR HONOR THESIS: awarded to the best senior honors thesis in 2004-2005.

Note: Undergraduate creative writing submissions are subject to review for publication by Short Vine magazine.

GRADUATE AWARDS

1. WESTHEIMER SHORT STORY PRIZE: awarded to the best short story written by a graduate student. 2. ELLlSTON/STRAUS/LANZIT PRIZE: awarded to the outstanding group of three to five poems by a graduate student.

3. ACADEMY OF AMERICAN POETS PR1ZE:  awarded for a single poem written by a graduate student.

4. PLAYWRITING PRIZE: awarded to the best play by a graduate student. 5. LAFCADIO HEARN JOURNALISM PRIZE: awarded to the outstanding feature article by a graduate student.

6. PROFESSIONAL WRITING PRIZE: awarded for excellence in professional writing by a graduate student.

7. ROBIN SHEETS CRITICAL ESSAY:  awarded for the best critical essay by a graduate student.

UC alum credits journalism program with early success

Zachary Jarrell came to the University of Cincinnati in 2019 to pursue a degree in statistics. In 2023, he graduated with a Bachelor’s in Journalism. For many undergraduates, the journey through college rarely takes the expected track. Detours happen, and majors change. When plans switch up, it can be helpful to a student’s success to find support. For Jarrell, it was the people he worked alongside in the journalism department who helped him on his journey. It has left a lasting impression on his life so far, guiding him to multiple internships as an undergraduate, real-world experience in prominent news outlets, and eventually a successful career in the highly competitive field of journalism.
