UC Science Fair Honors Young Scientists

The rainy, blustery day did not dampen the excitement of the April 2 UC Science and Engineering Expo. Top contestants became eligible to compete at the Ohio Academy of Science/State Science Day, coming up on May 7 at The Ohio State University.

The awards were announced in an afternoon ceremony at Fifth Third Arena at Shoemaker Center, where the crowd was greeted by UC President Nancy L. Zimpher, Provost Anthony Perzigian, Tom Cruse, associate provost for academic facility planning, and Karen Gould, dean of the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences.

The competition for 7-12 graders in southwest Ohio held $12,000 in awards for participants, including three $500 scholarships from the University of Cincinnati that were presented by UC President Nancy L. Zimpher. The three UC scholarships for Outstanding Achievement and Innovation in a Project were offered to Zachary Tong of Mason High School, Stephanie Meyer of Ursuline Academy and Drew Lagergren of Ursuline Academy. The science fair also presented 93 special awards contributed by sponsors that donated gifts for special categories.

Tom Cruse, chair of the science fair steering committee, said a total of 258 students representing 32 schools from five Ohio counties – Hamilton, Butler, Clermont, Warren and Preble – competed in the poster-judging session in UC’s Great Hall.

“Your being here today is a victory in itself,” said UC President Nancy L. Zimpher. “Your imagination, your creativity, and your persistence is worthy of our recognition.”

Provost Anthony J. Perzigian said the future of the nation depends on keeping a competitive edge in science, math and engineering. “You are the future, and after seeing today’s work, the nation is in good hands.”

The University of Cincinnati is covering the cost of the $45 registration fee for each of the projects to be entered in the state competition in May.

Zachary Jarrell came to the University of Cincinnati in 2019 to pursue a degree in statistics. In 2023, he graduated with a Bachelor’s in Journalism. For many undergraduates, the journey through college rarely takes the expected track. Detours happen, and majors change. When plans switch up, it can be helpful to a student’s success to find support. For Jarrell, it was the people he worked alongside in the journalism department who helped him on his journey. It has left a lasting impression on his life so far, guiding him to multiple internships as an undergraduate, real-world experience in prominent news outlets, and eventually a successful career in the highly competitive field of journalism.
