The Department of Geography's Recent Honorees

Dr. Margaret Zeigler was honored by the McMicken College of Arts and Science at its annual Awards Banquet on May 5, 2005, as one of five Distinguished Alumni for the year 2005. Dr. Zeigler, who received her MA(1992) and PhD(1995) from the department was cited for her work in human rights, nutrition, and women's issues at the Congressional Hunger Center in Washington D.C., where she now serves as Deputy Director.

Professor Howard A. Stafford who is retiring after 40 years of service to the department and the university was honored at the department's annual Fenneman Banquet on June 5, 2005. Former graduate students, friends, and faculty presented Professor Stafford with notification that an endowed, annual lecture devoted to economic geography has been established in his name.

UC alum credits journalism program with early success

Zachary Jarrell came to the University of Cincinnati in 2019 to pursue a degree in statistics. In 2023, he graduated with a Bachelor’s in Journalism. For many undergraduates, the journey through college rarely takes the expected track. Detours happen, and majors change. When plans switch up, it can be helpful to a student’s success to find support. For Jarrell, it was the people he worked alongside in the journalism department who helped him on his journey. It has left a lasting impression on his life so far, guiding him to multiple internships as an undergraduate, real-world experience in prominent news outlets, and eventually a successful career in the highly competitive field of journalism.
