Japan Foundation Grant Enhances Popular Program

A three-year $120,000 grant from the Japan Foundation will “substantially strengthen the Japanese instruction program at UC,” according to Dinshaw Mistry, director of Asian studies.

During the past two years, course enrollments have increased considerably, and more students are obtaining certificates and majors in the field. In addition, a significant number are studying abroad in Japan. Mistry observes that first-year Japanese language courses are usually fully enrolled by the end of June, so “dozens of freshman and others have been excluded from the class each fall.”

Grant money will help to alleviate that problem, as well as enabling the program to offer more third-year Japanese courses for those who wish to obtain higher levels of proficiency. Beginning in 2006, the funds will also provide some of the support for evening courses for those unable to enroll in day classes.

The Japan Foundation is sponsored by the Japanese government and awards funds to enhance Japanese language studies at American colleges.
