UC Clermont Campus Offers Bachelor of Science in Nursing Starting in January

The University of Cincinnati College of Nursing is helping address the national nursing shortage by offering a bachelor of science degree in nursing (BSN) at UC’s Clermont College campus, beginning in January 2006.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than 1 million new and replacement nurses will be needed by 2012. Currently, UC is the only four-year institution in the area the Clermont campus serves (Adams, Brown, Highland, Clermont, Clinton and eastern Hamilton counties) offering a BSN.

“Recruiting qualified and dedicated nurses is a challenge in many communities, including the suburban and rural counties UC Clermont serves,” says College of Nursing dean Andrea Lindell, DNSc. “Our program will assist them with their increasing need for registered nurses.”

Gayle Heintzelman, vice president of patient-care services at Mercy Hospital Clermont, agrees. “I’m excited to see this new program being offered by a quality institution like UC Clermont College,” she said. “I’m sure it will be a tremendous resource for our hospital, and it offers a great opportunity for students in the area who are interested in a career in nursing.”

Twenty-five students begin BSN classes in January. More than 100 students are currently enrolled in UC Clermont’s required pre-nursing program. For more information on the Clermont BSN program, contact the program’s associate director, Claudia Mitchell, at (513) 558-8981 or claudia.mitchell@uc.edu.

“This program will enable students throughout the greater Clermont County region to pursue a rewarding, high demand career close to home,” says David Devier, dean of UC Clermont College. “We’re delighted to be collaborating with the College of Nursing to deliver the BSN to this area.”

Founded in 1889, UC’s College of Nursing was the first school in the country to offer a baccalaureate program in nursing and received the first endowment ever given to a nursing program. In 2002 the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education accredited the college for a 10-year period, distinguishing it with 71 years of continuous accreditation.

The college currently has over 800 students, including undergraduate, graduate and PhD candidates, making it the 12th largest nursing school in the United States in terms of student and faculty, according to U.S.News & World Report. The college is also in the top 6 percent nationally in terms of research funding it receives.
