National Panel to Join With UC Colleges in Discussing 'Deliberative Democracy'

National experts join local elected officials, community leaders and UC faculty to explore and share perspectives on deliberative democracy, a model for action-oriented community problem solving and capacity building.

Funded by a grant from the Seasongood Foundation for Good Government, the Deliberative Democracy Symposium will be held on Feb. 9, 2006, on the Uptown West Campus, with a general session from 9:30 -11:45 a.m. in Tangeman University Center’s Great Hall. Panelists at the general session include:

• James S. Fishkin, professor of communication and director of the Center for Deliberative Democracy, Stanford University
• Michael K. Lewis, Esq., Neutral, JAMS, The Resolution Experts, Washington, D.C.
• Carrie Menkel-Meadow, professor of law and chair in dispute resolution and civil procedure, Georgetown University
• Lawrence E. Susskind, professor of urban and environmental planning, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and director of Public Dispute Program, Harvard Law School, and founder of the Consensus Building Institute
• Eileen Reed, Vice President, Cincinnati Board of Education
• James R. Tarbell, Vice Mayor, Cincinnati Council

Also, UC’s College of Business, College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning, College of Law, McMicken College of Arts and Sciences, and the Taft Research Center are holding special sessions in the afternoon.
