University Libraries Celebrate a Record for Annual Spring Event

University Libraries hosts the 15th annual Authors, Editors and Composers Reception and Program at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, in the Russell C. Myers Alumni Center (adjacent to the UC Faculty Club). The event is open to invited members of the UC community and will feature a record 475 submissions of published works by UC faculty,  including books, articles, original scores, artwork, photography, a CD and a DVD. The previous year’s reception highlighted 355 published works and 276 were submitted in 2004.

The reception will be hosted by Dean and University Librarian Victoria A. Montavon, who adds that the College of Education, Criminal Justice and Human Services – which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year – had the most faculty participants, 64, for the reception. The McMicken College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Medicine tied for second with 58 participants.

Montavon says the submissions from 282 faculty represent every UC college, as well as University Libraries, the Institute for the Study of Health and the Division of Professional Practice. The published works also cover a range of languages, including English, Hebrew, Japanese, Russian and German.

University of Cincinnati President Nancy L. Zimpher and Provost Anthony J. Perzigian will have opening remarks, plus the program will feature three of UC’s outstanding authors, editors and composers:

  • Darwin Henderson, associate professor, College of Education, Criminal Justice and Human Services – Henderson has dedicated his career to promoting multicultural literature in early childhood education. He was an invited guest curator of an art exhibit to honor the career of award-winning illustrator and writer Ashley Bryan. In addition to the exhibit, Henderson will also discuss his book, “Exploring Culturally Diverse Literature for Children and Adolescents.”
  • Jenefer M. Robinson, professor, McMicken College of Arts & Sciences – Robinson is the 2006 recipient of the George Rieveschl Award for Creative or Scholarly Works. The internationally known philosophy professor will discuss her book, "Deeper than Reason: Emotion and its Role in Literature, Music and Art."  Published by Oxford University Press, the 500-page book examines emotional involvement in art and music.
  • Cynthia A. Stegeman, assistant professor, Raymond Walters College – Stegeman, an assistant professor for the Dental Hygiene Department, will discuss her book, “The Dental Hygienist’s Guide to Nutritional Care.”  A 1979 graduate of the Raymond Walters College dental hygiene program, Stegeman is credited with authoring the first nutrition textbook specifically for dental hygienists to assist patients.

A selection of the published works will be exhibited at the April 26 event, then moved to Langsam Library, where they will be on public display on the library’s fourth and fifth floors through UC Commencement in June.

The Authors, Editors and Composers Reception features published works with a copyright of 2005 and is sponsored by the Friends of the University Libraries.
