A Record Success For UC s Relay For Life

UC’s Center for Community Engagement reports that the fourth-annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life at the University of Cincinnati was the most successful to date.

Steve Trepkowski, program coordinator for the UC Center for Community Engagement, says the overnight event April 28-29 on McMickon Commons brought out 80 teams with nearly 1,000 volunteers and raised more than $75,000 to support cancer research and education. The previous highest total, $71,000, was reported last spring.

The teams dressed in costumes reflecting popular TV shows and film to show spirit and compete for prizes. Cary Bohlen, a first-year interior design student, was a member of a team representing a DAAP student studio group. Reflecting the Wizard of Oz, the students dressed up as everything from Dorothy to the apple-throwing tree.

“We had 19 students on our team and one pup tent,” says Bohlen, who dressed up as a tornado. “Most of us stayed up all night, because we were already used to pulling all-nighters at DAAP.” Bohlen adds that she plans to participate in next year’s fund-raiser.

Relay For Life is an overnight event that is the largest fund-raiser for the American Cancer Society. Peter Osborne, Southwest Ohio Public Relations Director for the American Cancer Society, says volunteers around Ohio raised more than $15.3 million to fight cancer through 198 Relay For Life events in 2005. That Ohio figure is expected to increase to $17 million this year.

The UC/Relay For Life campaign will be taking donations through Aug. 31. For more information, check the UC/Relay For Life Web site
