University Memorial Service Filled with Words of Remembrance and Comfort

Students, faculty, staff, friends and loved ones attended the university’s first ceremony to remember those in the university community who passed away over the past year.

“We extend a warm welcome to the family and friends present. Thank you for sharing your loved ones with us,” said Mitchel D. Livingston, UC Vice President for Student Affairs and Services. Livingston remarked on one of the principles of UC’s Just Community initiative, celebrating the uniqueness of each individual. He said each and every person remembered at the ceremony was known by someone in the UC community, and it was a day to pause and hear their stories.

Twenty people shared their remembrances of their colleague, teacher, spouse or friend, including Psychology Professor Joel Warm, who called his departed colleague Harold Fishbein a world-renowned researcher and thoughtful and passionate member of the university community.

Associate Electronic Media Professor Marjorie Fox remarked that student Jennifer Miley was motivated by a desire to “do good and help others. She was indeed a splendid shooting star,” Fox said.

Julie Hollyday, editor-in-chief of The News Record student newspaper, gave an emotional tribute to journalism professor and The News Record advisor Al Salvato, a respected journalist who lost his battle with leukemia in February. “I often ask myself, ‘What would Al say? What would Al think?’ He is still with me in every aspect of my life,” she said.

Lawrence J. Johnson, dean of the College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services, paid tribute to Education Professor Joseph Zins, calling him a stellar scholar who had great passion for his students. “He will be sorely missed,” Johnson said.

UC President Nancy L. Zimpher closed the ceremony with a moment of silence, adding there are countless other stories to be told. She said the ceremony was indeed a memorial, but also a celebration of lives filled with stories of kindness, compassion and humor.
