Cheers and Tears Continue Traditions of UC s Commencement

UC awarded more than 4,000 degrees at Spring Commencement – divided into two ceremonies so that each and every graduate could be called by name and congratulated on stage.

One of them had never set foot on campus previously. Kathy Chance of El Dorado, Calif., was one of 27 distance learners graduating with a master’s degree from the College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services’ educational leadership program. Her parents flew in from Oregon to attend the morning ceremony.

The ivy chain continued a tradition at UC that has been in existence since 1903. A special faculty reception line to congratulate the graduates – organized by UC Faculty Senate – began a new one. There was one break in tradition this year. A cool spell – along with a little rain – brought a break to the June heat that typically arrives for spring Commencement.
