All Quiet (Almost) on UC s West Campus

In the fall of 1991, University of Cincinnati students came back from summer to find construction underway at the corner of Jefferson Avenue and Corry Boulevard. The construction of Edwards Center was ongoing at the time.

Every year since, up through last fall, students have returned to an “Under Construction” West Campus at the start of the fall quarter. For instance, in fall 2005, students returned to campus to find the Richard E. Lindner Varsity Village project still under construction – along with the Campus Recreation Center.

But this fall is different since UC construction efforts are now focused on the East Campus’ Academic Health Center and its Medical Sciences Building renovation and CARE-Crawley addition.

So, with the exception of two projects – a renovation of Teachers College/Dyer Hall and a renovation in Edwards Center – students will return to a quiet West Campus in the fall of 2006.

The West Campus renovation for Teachers College/Dyer Hall is being completed in phases. The first phase is already complete and included renovation of 7,000 square feet of classroom and office space, ADA upgrades, a new elevator and HVAC improvements. The second phase, which will completely renovate the original Teachers College built in 1930, is scheduled to begin in January 2007. Major building improvements will include reconfiguration of approximately 60,000 square feet of space with all new interior finishes and furnishings, new HVAC, new electrical and plumbing systems as well as new lighting, data wiring, audio-visual systems and security. Once the second phase of renovation is complete, Teachers College/Dyer Hall will house up to 130 faculty and staff offices, four new learning rooms and a videoconference room. The building will also house campus’ Curriculum Resources Center. The second phase of renovation will cost about $18 million and is set for completion in spring 2008.

In addition, renovations are currently underway for 37,000 square feet of space in Edwards Center to accommodate those being displaced by the renovation of Teachers College/Dyer Hall. This renovation includes offices, labs and classrooms. The approximate cost of the Edwards Center renovations, scheduled for completion by the end of fall quarter 2006, is $2.2 million.
