Guest Conductor Hugh Wolff Leads CCM Philharmonia November 3

The

University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music

(CCM) is proud to welcome vibrant American conductor

Hugh Wolff

to the podium of the

CCM Philharmonia

for a special concert event on

Friday, Nov. 3

. The performance is at 8 p.m. in CCM's Corbett Auditorium, and admission is FREE and open to the public.

Paris-born and Harvard-educated artist Hugh Wolff is one of the few American conductors to enjoy a truly international reputation. A student of Charles Bruck and Olivier Messiaen and a protege of Mstislav Rostropovich, Wolff has conducted with orchestras throughout North America, Canada, Europe, Australia and Japan. His appointments at the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra (1988-2000) and Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra (1997-2006, where he was succeeded by Paavo Järvi) were distinguished by exciting interpretations and versatility of programming. The New York Times wrote: "The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Hugh Wolff, has developed an effortlessly polished sound ... Mr. Wolff shapes his interpretations with impeccable taste."

Wolff leads the CCM Philharmonia (Mark Gibson, music director) through three iconic pieces of the Romantic era. Excerpts of Richard Wagner's Die Götterdämmerung (Prologue, Part 2) and Die Walkure ("Winterstürme ... Du bist der Lenz") feature the powerful voices of CCM faculty artists Barbara Honn and Tom Baresel. Closing the concert is Hector Berlioz's passionate programmatic masterpiece, Symphonie Fantastique, Op. 14.

Hugh Wolff
The American conductor Hugh Wolff is among the leading conductors of his generation. He was born in 1953 in Paris of American parents. After graduating from Harvard, Wolff returned to Paris on a fellowship, where he studied with Charles Bruck and Olivier Messiaen. He then continued his studies in Baltimore with Leon Fleisher.

Wolff began his professional career as associate conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra of Washington under Mstislav Rostropovich in 1979. He then served as Music Director of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra from 1985 to 1992. His association with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra began with his appointment as its principal conductor in 1988, and he held the position of music director from 1992 to 2000 and toured the United States, Europe and Japan. Of this partnership, The New York Times wrote: "The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Hugh Wolff, has developed an effortlessly polished sound ... Mr. Wolff shapes his interpretations with impeccable taste."

Wolff became principal conductor of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra in September 1997, a position he held through 2006. He has made several recordings with the orchestra, and has appeared at the Salzburg Festival, the Rheingau Festival and Mozart Festival in Würzburg, and in France, Italy and Estonia, as well as on a highly acclaimed three-week tour of Japan. The Sunday Times wrote of their recording of George Antheil's Symphonies Nos. 1 & 6: "The Frankfurt Radio SO under Wolff dazzles throughout."

He appears regularly with all the major North American orchestras, including those of Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Toronto, and he has conducted leading ensembles in Canada, Australia and Japan. European engagements include appearances with the Leipzig Gewandhaus, NDR Hamburg, Philharmonia Orchestras and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie, BBC Philharmonic, Oslo Philharmonic, Danish National Radio Symphony, Orchestre National de Lyon and Czech Philharmonic orchestras.

Wolff has an extensive discography on the Teldec label, with works ranging from Haydn to Stravinsky with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and the Philharmonia Orchestra. His recordings for Decca include a disc of works by Aaron Jay Kernis with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (Argo label), and a disc with Jean-Yves Thibaudet and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. He has also recorded the Barber and Meyer Violin Concertos with Hilary Hahn for Sony Classical, which along with the disc of Antheil Symphonies 1 & 6 won a 2001 Cannes Classical Award.
