Tokyo String Quartet Performs Chamber Music by Master Composers April 13

The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) is proud to welcome back to Corbett Auditorium the internationally acclaimed

Tokyo String Quartet

, performing in concert Friday, April 13, at 8 p.m.

Officially formed in 1969 at The Juilliard School, the Tokyo String Quartet includes violinists Martin Beaver and Kikuei Ikeda, violist Kazuhide Isomura and cellist Clive Greensmith. A former quartet-in-residence at CCM, the ensemble returns to Cincinnati as part of its extensive touring schedule this season, which includes performances throughout Europe, Asia, and North and South America.

The April concert features compositions by three of the masters of the Classical and Romantic eras: Joseph Haydn's Quartet in D, Op. 76, No. 2; Robert Schumann's Quartet in F, Op. 41, No. 2; and Ludwig van Beethoven's Quartet in C, Op. 59, No. 3.

Inclusion of music by Schumann holds special importance for the Quartet this year, as they honor the composer in recognition of the 150th anniversary of his death. Also significant is the performance of the Beethoven work — one of the composer's three "Razumovsky" quartets — which follows the ensemble's highly successful release of the complete "Razumovsky" quartets on the Harmonia Mundi label last year.

The Tokyo String Quartet has released more than 40 other landmark recordings on BMG/RCA Victor Red Seal, Angel-EMI, CBS Masterworks, Deutsche Grammophon and Vox Cum Laude, including the complete quartets of Beethoven, Schubert and Bartók.

The ensemble performs on the "Paganini Quartet," a group of renowned Stradivarius instruments made in the mid-18th century and named for legendary virtuoso Niccolò Paganini, who acquired and played them during the 19th century. These instruments have been on loan to the ensemble since 1995, when they were purchased from the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.

Admission is $15, $10 for non-UC students, and free for UC students. For tickets and information, please contact the CCM Box Office at 513-556-4183 or visit www.ccm.uc.edu.
