CCM Choirs and Concert Orchestra Combine for Musical Journey Through Time

The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music's (CCM's) Chamber Choir, Chorale and Concert Orchestra join forces for a concert of works spanning five centuries and four distinct musical styles. The performance takes place Friday, April 20, at 8 p.m. in CCM's Corbett Auditorium.

The CCM Chamber Choir opens the program with 16th-century composer Thomas Tallis' forty-part motet, Spem in alium. Composed for eight choirs of five voices each, the Renaissance-era masterpiece is an etude of contrasting styles and complex counterpoint, resulting in what can be described as an ocean of sound.

The CCM Concert Orchestra follows with the 20th-century composition Fantasy on a Theme of Thomas Tallis by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Written for a string orchestra divided into three parts -- full ensemble, reduced orchestra and string quartet -- Fantasy was the noted composer's first major success.

The Chamber Choir, Chorale and Concert Orchestra combine for Igor Stravinsky's 1930 neoclassical work, Symphony of Psalms, followed by Mozart's Vesperae solennes de confessore (or "Solemn Vespers"), a setting of the five psalms and Magnificat used in the Catholic Vespers service. Mozart wrote this piece in 1780 toward the end of his Salzburg years, and it is perhaps most known by the beautiful soprano solo "Laudate Dominum."
