CCM Philharmonia Performs World Premiere by Zemlinsky Prize-Winning Composer
The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) is proud to present the world premiere of Zemlinsky Prize-winning composer Enrico Chapela's Encrypted Poetry Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra. Performing this new work is the CCM Philharmonia Orchestra with Percussion Group Cincinnati under the direction of faculty conductor Mark Gibson. The event takes place April 26 at 8 p.m. in CCM's Corbett Auditorium. Admission is free.
In 2005, Chapela won CCM's Alexander Zemlinsky Prize for composition, which included a cash award of $30,000 and a commission for a new work. The resulting musical piece, Encrypted Poetry Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra, is based on Edgar Allan Poe's poem "The Raven."
Allen Otte, CCM professor of percussion and director of Percussion Group Cincinnati, met with Chapela earlier this year to discuss the progression of the piece. "We have had a great deal of input into our parts," he says, "and Enrico has been wonderful to work with-finding ways to incorporate our many requests and suggestions and accepting that our input comes from years of experience with percussion in this kind of music."
A 32-year-old native of Alvaro Obregon, Mexico, Chapela is a trained guitarist as well as a composer. His works have received recognition from international juries, including the International Rostrum of Composers (Paris) and the Anacrusax Sax Quartet Composition Contest.
The Zemlinsky Prize was created at the request of Alexander Zemlinsky's widow, Louise Zemlinsky, and is awarded by CCM once every six years in recognition of achievement in musical composition for artists aged 35 or younger. In 2005, CCM received entries from more than 100 composers from 13 countries.
