Ooohhh, Aaahhh and Ouch! Futuristic Products With Bite at UC Tech Expo

Tomorrow’s solutions for today’s problems will be on display from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Wednesday, May 16, at the Duke Energy Center, 525 Elm St., downtown.

That’s where and when hundreds of seniors from the University of Cincinnati’s College of Applied Science will display fully functioning, technology-related solutions to improve and enhance all aspects of daily life, from exercise to entertainment to education.

Projects include

Ouch!
“Dental Robot for Root Canals” is a better – meaning faster – approach for performing root canals.

Rev it up
Four students designed and built an off-road “Mini-Baja Car” specifically for use in extreme racing conditions.

Alzheimer’s alarm
Using radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology, a student created an “Alzheimer Alarm” that provides a warning when an Alzheimer patient leaves a residential facility.

A cool idea
“Car Cooler for Pet Safety” is an efficient battery-powered car cooler that allows pet owners to safely leave a pet in the family car while running errands on a hot day.

A helping arm
An “Assistive Feeding Device” with a height-adjustable platform and utensil arm allows quadriplegics to feed themselves.

Know the score
An “NBA draft calculator” provides basketball draftniks the ultimate measurement tool for determining the future success of an NBA draft pick.

Lighten up
The “Jogging Generator” provides runners with increased safety, both day and night, by converting the exerciser’s energy into power for LED lighting incorporated into a jogging vest.

African American history comes to life
An important agricultural invention – an “1890 Horse-Drawn Soil Pulverizer”  – originally created by escaped 19th-century slave, freedom fighter, businessman and innovator John P. Parker is built to its full size.

Too much pet, too little space
An “In-Wall Pet Food Storage and Feeder” allows for the storage of a large amount of pet food hidden within a wall and attached to a feeder system.

Should fish take a pill?
How much acetaminophen, a pain reliever marketed under a number of brand names like Tylenol, is to be found in local waterways? The project, “Acetaminophen in Area Waterways,” is a study that looks at how much of the ingredient is to be found in the area’s water supply.
